This study looked at the production and distribution of art, and art activities in multiple layers from a social scientific perspective, focusing on artist residencies in Korean society. The main purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of artist residencies in Korean society and the impact of artist residencies on arts activities in Korea. Artist residencies in Korea began to emerge in the mid-1990s, reflecting Western operating methods. At the beginning of the residencies operation, it was mainly limited to the role of providing a space for artistic creation in the field of visual arts, but after about 20 years, it gradually became equipped with various roles and functions. Artist residencies in Korea has increased in quantity to the extent that it exists in most metropolitan cities nationwide. Many of these spaces not only provide private studios, but also hold exhibitions for residents, support publicity, support art criticism, and exchange functions, and have established themselves as preferred spaces for many artists. In particular, artists prefer residencies located in the metropolitan area, run by museums with high public confidence both inside and outside the art world, or with easy commuting via public transportation. This study judged that it would be possible to analyze in-depth the production and distribution process of art and arts activities in Korea by examining the layers of artist residencies with such a complex characteristics and various arts activities linked to artist residencies. This study dealt with artist residencies in three main parts. First, artist residencies in Korea has been continuously increasing in connection with metropolitan cities and provinces across the country. In this study, in order to demonstrate this, the primary data was established through the collection and coding of artist residencies cases across the country, and then statistical analysis was conducted. As a result of the analysis, it was found that there are differences in the spatial characteristics, operational characteristics, and program characteristics of artist residencies. In particular, recently, artist residencies focused on community activities has emerged in Korea, and it was found that there is room for operation with different characteristics depending on how the concept of artist residencies are set. Based on these analysis results, this study suggested that the concept of artist residencies should be clearly established and the growth of artists should be supported based on flexible connections with the local community, in a situation where artist residencies has already increased nationwide in Korean society. Along with this, this study also raised the need for qualitative improvement to support realistic growth based on the autonomy of artists and the need for improvement and reexamination of the residency program as a whole. Second, in this study, focusing on the connection between artist residencies and the commercial market, the case of operating a permanent art market in an artist residency with an experimental character was analyzed based on Bourdieu's art production field theory. Seoul Art Space Sindang's S-store was established to help artists maintain their economic stability and creative activities by connecting former and current resident artists to the commercial market as an artist residency that supports fine art venues. It can be seen as an important case with considerable rarity in that it can examine the singularity of the commercial art field of complex character based on the pure art field and the change in perception experienced by the participating artists. As a result of this study, unlike the general mass distribution market, the case of S-store was unique in that it fully reflected the characteristics of artists and artistic creations in the overall production, distribution, sales, and operation. However, in the case of artists, entry into the commercial distribution market was found to be an incidental factor that was considered only when physical and temporal conditions were possible in the process of preparing for an exhibition. These results are interpreted as the fact that the logic of limited production and large-scale production proposed by Bourdieu is still operating within the artist's perception, despite the fact that the S-store case has the characteristic of combining experimental characteristics. In addition, this study drew a distinction from other studies based on the Bourdieu's theory in that it was possible to examine the structure of the field, which changes flexibly according to the roles of actors in the field. Along with this, this study showed that it is possible to make various attempts to consider residents through artist residencies, and raised the need for an in-depth understanding of the art world, art production, and the status and qualifications of artists when fine art and commercial markets are connected. Thirdly, this study paid attention to artists who continued their artistic work by actively utilizing artist residencies and fund system. This study predicted that the dynamics of neoliberal rule competition from Foucault's point of view would also affect arts activities. From this point of view, based on the concept of governmentality and self-care presented by Foucault, the neoliberal governmentality inherent in arts activities and the self-care of individual artists were interpreted. Through this interpretation, the study examined the influence of art support on arts activities. As expected in this study, the governmentality of neoliberalism appeared in arts support, but it was found that it was based on mutual responsibility, trust, and consideration. Artists participate in various activities presented by artist residencies and react sensitively to influences outside the art world, but on the other hand, it was found that they are using their own skills to shape themselves. These results showed that the concepts of governmentality and self-care presented individually by Foucault appeared in a complex way. At this point, this study presented the originality and significance of a study differentiated from previous studies limited to the concept of governmentality or based only on the concept of self-care. However, artists who have experienced the art support system more often feel the need for a permanent settlement space. They aim to reach a state in which work can be done without the use of support systems, but only by winning the competition for neoliberal governance. In this aspect, the paradoxical reality of artists was revealed. Fully understanding the reality of these artists is the priority of art support, and this study showed that it is necessary to prepare realistic measures considering the life cycle of individual artists from a long-term perspective. In the meantime, research on artist residencies in Korea has been conducted mostly in fragments, either limited to famous residencies located in the metropolitan area or focusing on specific cases in non-metropolitan areas. This study has originality and significance in that it examines the characteristics of artist residencies in Korean society and analyzes Korean arts activities closely related to it in a multi-layered manner based on the theories of Bourdieu and Foucault. Beyond artist residencies, it is expected to make a significant contribution to improving the art support system in the future and considering artist support.
