Due to environmental factors such as petroleum resource depletion, improvement of air pollution, prevention of global warming, as well as policy factors such as the 2030 national greenhouse gas reduction target and the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, research and development on eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are actively being conducted worldwide, and they are being commercially available in the market. The increase in the distribution and usage of eco-friendly vehicles and the improvement of quality of life are closely related. As a result, accidents related to eco-friendly vehicles, such as contact, fire, and explosion, are also increasing. However, the safety elements of eco-friendly vehicles, such as fire suppression systems, post-accident response, and containment methods, are not keeping up with the pace of technological research and development of equipment and systems. Thus, although eco-friendly vehicles have made significant contributions to the development of modern society, if the safety elements are not stabilized, they could lead to severe disasters. In particular, the current issue of EV fires can result in significant secondary damages, including property and human casualties, if the post-accident response is inadequate. Therefore, appropriate handling and swift response systems in accident scenes and situations are crucial for minimizing losses. Most EV fires occur due to thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and can be classified as self-ignition in parked vehicles, fires during operation, and fires after traffic accidents. The larger the size and capacity of the battery pack, the more severe the fire, and the more batteries installed, the more energy can be generated, increasing the risk of fire. When gases emitted from a battery fire accumulate and mix with the surrounding oxygen, gas explosions can occur, especially in enclosed parking lots, where fires can be much larger than in open areas. Therefore, in the event of an EV fire in an indoor parking area, urgent measures are needed to minimize fire spread and provide rapid fire suppression. However, there is currently no perfect and fast fire suppression method, so the best approach is to develop safer batteries for EVs to reduce the occurrence of fires. However, it will take around 10 years for the commercialization of solid-state batteries, which are relatively safe from fires. Considering the lifespan of EVs already equipped with LIBs and being sold, it is urgent to establish an automatic fire suppression system for them. The prefabricated water tank, which is the current suppression method, can be installed in the indoor parking area, but it is impossible to lift it with a crane and immerse it in the water tank due to the height of the parking lot. In addition, the method using the suffocation fire extinguisher can block the spread of flame and smoke at the beginning, but over time, the battery temperature rises and off-gas is continuously emitted, so it cannot be a fundamental fire method. Therefore, in this study, a new design method called the fire compartmentation and automatic fire suppression tank installation system is proposed to overcome these limitations. The current design of the indoor parking area permits up to 3 electric vehicles and uses it as one fire prevention compartment, but the proposed design is to have a firewall for each vehicle. As a result, it is possible to prevent damage to adjacent vehicles in the event of an EV fire, and if only one side is blocked in addition to the three sides of the fire protection compartment, the sprinkler and the pressurized water supply device dedicated to the EV can be operated to quickly collect the fire extinguishing water in the tank. The proposed automatic firewater tank installation system includes three options: System 1 operates using a hydraulic pull cylinder that activates during a BEV (battery electric vehicle) fire, pulling a water barrier plate attached to the floor to a 90˚ angle, forming a tank structure. System 2 involves an upper-positioned water barrier plate that descends to the bottom during a fire through the operation of an electric motor. Lastly, the automatic lift system allows the submerged lower section for a BEV fire vehicle by constructing a pit with a hydraulic cylinder. The system maintains the same height as other parking spaces during normal conditions but lowers the bottom section by activating the hydraulic cylinder during a fire, forming a tank structure. To verify the effect of the proposed system, Pyrosim, an interface program based on FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator), was used. Four scenarios were considered: when the detector detects a fire ① only the sprinkler operates, ② the sprinkler and the water barrier (lift) operate, ③ the sprinkler, the water barrier (lift) and the pressurized water supply device (water outlet) operate, ④ the same as scenario 3 but assuming a doubling of the water supply. Simulation results showed that scenario 1, which only involved fire detection and operation of K-factor 115 sprinklers, was insufficient to adequately suppress the fire by cooling the BEV. The theoretical calculation for suppressing an EV fire requires approximately 8㎥ of water, but scenario 2, which also formed a water barrier plate in addition to fire detection and sprinkler operation, could only collect about 1.8㎥ of water in 10 min (taking a long time of approximately 38 min to collect 8㎥). Scenarios 3 and 4 involved the operation of K-factor 115 sprinklers, the EV-specific pressurized water supply system, and the formation of a water barrier plate. By quickly flooding the vehicle's lower section through the drainage outlet, approximately 8㎥ of water could be collected in a short time (10 min for scenario 3 and 7 min for scenario 4), rapidly lowering the temperature and maximizing the extinguishing effect. Consequently, through fire simulations and theoretical evaluations, it was confirmed that scenario 3, determined as the most appropriate and efficient method, enables the suppression of EV fires. If the proposed fire compartment and automatic firewater tank installation system design from this paper are implemented when installing EV charging facilities in indoor parking areas, it is expected to support rapid fire suppression, as well as facilitate smooth accident response for personnel.
