The purpose of this study is to examine what a depressed woman in her 20s experience through art therapy and the meaning of the experience. For the purpose, this study aims to explore what the research participant experienced by applying qualitative case study methods. The participant is a woman in her 20s who has not been diagnosed with depression, but has been feeling depressed for an extended time. The case was conducted once a week, 90 minutes per session, for a total of 16 sessions from July to December 2022, excluding 4 pre-interviews and 2 post interviews. The goal of this art therapy is to reduce depression by using art materials to regulate depressed and anxious emotions, increase personal strength, and correct distorted thoughts about men, and excessive expectations of herself. In addition, the art therapy session was organized to provide corrective emotional experience through the process of art therapy and bring focus to participant’s matured self and bettered environment, to help participant have more reasonable and positive perspective on present and future. Data was collected through audio files, in-depth interviews of the participant, researcher’s observation journal, participant’s thought record, and pictures of artworks. All data was collected with the consent of the research participant and were analyzed by constant comparison method to examine the experience and meanings of the experience of art therapy for a depressed woman in her 20s. As a result of analyzing the data collected, a total of 7 categories and 16 sub-categories were induced. In this case study, the 7 categories were set as following; , , , , , and . Based on the results of this study, the conclusion of what a depressed woman in her 20s experienced in the process of art therapy are as follows. First, through art therapy, the participant gained an objective perspective by exploring her emotions and thoughts, then implementing and observing them through various colors and mediums. Through this, self-awareness and understanding were achieved by integrating ambivalent feelings and multifaceted personality. Second, the participant was able to gradually express and reveal herself by establishing a therapeutic relationship based on trust with the researcher, and experienced corrective emotions through the researcher who accepted the participant as she is. Participant, who had negative self-image became aware of her positive changes and recognized herself positively. Third, the participant practiced expanding understanding of others by discovering positivity in them and having optimistic outlook on herself, others, and the future, resulting in reduce of suicidal ideation. In conclusion, the depressed woman in her 20s could explore and understand herself through the process of art therapy and experience corrective emotions through the reliable therapeutic alliances with the researcher, which implanted trust in others and improved confidence in herself and interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, the participant gained optimistic perspective on self, others, and the future. Therefore, it is hoped that this study can be the foundation of quantitative and qualitative research cases on art therapy for depressed women in 20s.
