This study aimed to investigate the breeding ecology of Black-tailed gulls in South Korea and identify the biotic and abiotic factors that influence their breeding ecology. To compare the effects of abiotic factors, including climatic and geographical environments, on the breeding ecology of Blacktailed gulls, five breeding colonies with different environmental characteristics on the western coast were selected as study areas. (Dongman Island, Nan Island, Gungsi Island, Napdaegi Island, and Bullmugi Island). GPS trackers were attached to individuals at each breeding site to compare their behavioral patterns in response to surrounding environmental factors. GPS trackers were attached to individuals at each breeding site to compare their behavioral patterns in response to surrounding environmental factors. Additionally, to examine the influence of biotic factors such as intraspecific competition and sex on their breeding strategies, physical and behavioral differences between males and females were compared. Lastly, to assess the level of marine pollution in breeding colonies of Black-tailed gulls, marine litter was collected in their colony, and the types of frequently encountered marine debris were investigated. Black-tailed gulls exhibited different behavioral patterns depending on the environmental factors such as sea surface temperature (SST), water depth, distance from land, and foraging habitat types surrounding their breeding sites. The increase in sea surface temperature generally decreased the home range and foraging frequency of individuals in most breeding sites, while increasing their foraging duration. Moreover, the habitat use patterns of individuals varied according to water depth and distance from land, and the types and frequencies of foraging areas also differed among each breeding colony. This indicates that black-tailed gulls flexibility adjust their behavioral patterns based on the environmental characteristics of their breeding sites and accessibility to food sources. The measurements revealed that male Black-tailed gulls were heavier and larger in size than females across all breeding sites. Their breeding strategies and foraging patterns showed sexual segregation, with males spending more time at the breeding sites and exhibiting shorter hunting time, flight distance, and narrower home ranges compared to females. Conversely, females hunted for longer periods over wider ranges and showed a tendency to start hunting earlier in the morning than males. Differences were also found in the types of foraging areas used by each sex, with males predominantly utilizing ports and fish farms, while females primarily foraged in marine and tidal areas. The distance from land had the most significant influence on male’s breeding behaviors, while population size was a key factor influencing female’s behavioral patterns. Consequently, Black-tailed gulls exhibited sex-specific reproductive strategies. In July 2020, a total of 82 marine litter items were collected from the Nan Island, with fisheryrelated litters (fishing hooks, fishing lines, nets, and ropes) accounting for 74.4% (61 items) of the total, followed by litters of unknown origin at 17.1% and non-fishery-related litters (plastic fragments) at 8.5%. The majority of marine litters found in the breeding colony of Black-tailed gull was associated with fishing activities. Furthermore, when comparing the areas used by Black-tailed gulls for foraging during the study period, out of a total of 6,312 foraging behavior, 3,284 events (over half) were recorded in fish farms and ports. This indicates that Black-tailed gulls have a high preference for habitats associated with fishing activities during the breeding period. This study provides valuable information on the breeding ecology of Black-tailed gulls in South Korea and the various biotic and abiotic factors that influence them. The importance of seabirds in marine ecosystems is increasing, but their populations are declining due to environmental changes. The results of this study aim to provide new perspectives on the breeding ecology of Black-tailed gulls and valuable information for the conservation strategies and management plans for seabirds.
