Abstract The increase in demand for electric vehicles has demanded increased production of batteries, and securing rare metals required for battery manufacturing has become an important task. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an efficient and economical technology for recovering rare metals from waste batteries, and dry and wet recovery methods are widely used. This study is to extract the NCM-based Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05(OH)2 precursor used as a cathode active material by a co-precipitation synthesis method using a black powder leaching solution of a recycled lithium ion battery. The co-precipitation synthesis method is a wet recovery method in which valuable metals are recovered using a high-concentration acidic solution and a reducing agent. The metal salt produced in the previous step of solvent extraction is stirred in a reactor with various conditions, washed and dried to extract the cathode active material. Waste acid and waste water which made it possible to minimize. Precursor was prepared with variables such as co-precipitation time, NH4OH concentration, pH and stirring time, and the prepared powder was characterized through XRD, SEM, EDS-Mapping, PSA and Tap-density test, and ICP-OES analysis. Through XRD analysis, the Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05(OH)2 peak of the layered crystal structure of P3m1 was confirmed, and the distribution and thickness of Ni,Co,Mn acicular crystals were confirmed by SEM and EDS-Mapping. The values of NCM powder particle size and density were confirmed by PSA and Tap-density tests, and the atomic contents (%) and error rate of the metal salt solution introduced into the co-precipitation reaction of NCM precursors were confirmed by ICP-OES analysis. From the above results, it was confirmed that various combinations of NCM cathode active materials having a layered structure of P3m1 can be prepared from a black powder leaching solution of a recycled lithium ion battery using the co-precipitation synthesis method.
