Recently, the use of large batteries such as electric vehicle and small batteries such as laptop, smartphones continues to increase. Accordingly, various research is being conducted to apply all-solid-state batteries to real life, which can solve various problems of existing lithium-ion batteries. However, compared to the electrical and chemical properties of all-solid-state batteries, research on mechanical properties related to battery durability is not sufficient. All-solid-state batteries have internal components such as electrode active materials and solid electrolytes all in powder form, and the compression process is essential in the all-solid-state battery manufacturing process. During the powder compression process, stress concentration occurs due to agglomeration between powders. Stress concentration phenomenon caused by differences in material properties and compression is an important issue that must be resolved as it causes problems such as reduced durability of products. To solve these problems, research on compression analysis of various mixed powders is needed. In this study, the discrete element method (DEM) was used to numerically analyze the compression properties according to the mixed composition of powders with different material properties and compare them with actual experimental result. The materials to be used in the experiment and analysis were the negative electrode active material, Graphite and the positive electrode active material, NMC. Through a study analyzing the compression properties of various solid electrolytes with different mechanical properties, LGPS displayed the best compression properties and therefore was selected. Through research on mixing solid electrolyte with electrode active material at various weight ratios and comparing size ratios by changing the size of electrode active material powder and solid electrolyte powder. Mixing properties and size ratio of powders were analyzed to enhance compression characteristics. Considering the characteristics of the battery, a solid electrolyte mixing ratio of 30wt% and a size ratio of graphite to LGPS were selected at 1.5:1, 1:0.5 in the cathode. In addition, the solid electrolyte mixing ratio of 40wt% in the anode and the size ratio of NMC powder to LGPS were selected as 1.5:1, 1:0.5. When applying the size ratio in the compression of the negative active material-solid electrolyte mixed powder, the stress transfer rate between the top punch and bottom punch decreased by about 2%, 4%. The transfer rate in compression of the positive electrode active material-solid electrolyte mixed powder increased by about 5% and decreased by about 3%. To check the compression force distribution of the all-solid-state battery mixed powder green compact, the standard deviation of the compression force was calculated by dividing it into 12 sections. As the size ratio of the particles increased, the standard deviation of the compression force decreased by about 8% and 12% for the anode and increased by about 7% and 35% for the cathode, respectively. Based on these results, it was confirmed that in the mixed compression of electrode active material and solid electrolyte powder, as the size ratio of the electrode active material decreases, stress distribution was not uniform and compression characteristics deteriorated. It was confirmed that as the size ratio of the electrode active material and solid electrolyte increases, small particles enter between large particles and the void fraction decreases. In this study, we confirmed the influence of variables such as material properties, mixing ratio, particle size that must be considered when manufacturing all-solid-state batteries various compression characteristics were investigated. These research results will be helpful in improving the performance, durability, and mechanical properties of all-solid-state batteries in the future.
