A multifunctional membrane for electrochemical metal removal, aimed at eliminating low-concentration heavy metal ions from wastewater through electrodialysis was developed. These membranes were fabricated through the pore-filling method, wherein porous PTFE substrates are infused with monomer blend solutions containing ion-exchangeable vinyl phosphonic acid (VPA) or Vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride (VBTMA), along with crosslinking agents, including polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA), acrylated thiourea (ATU), and acrylated tannic acid (ATA), with the latter two synthesized crosslinkers serving as sorptive functionality. These pore-filling membranes exhibit excellent mechanical and dimensional stability, making them suitable for use in electrochemical metal removal systems. To assess the membrane's performance, several crucial parameters are examined, such as ion exchange capacity (IEC), ionic conductivity, metal ion removal capacity, and reusability. In the case of copper ions, batch-type removal experiments are carried out to evaluate removal performance at pH 5 and pH 7. When these membranes are employed in electrochemical metal removal systems, they exhibit exceptional efficiency, reducing the copper concentration from 1 ppm to 0.01 ppm without permeating them. For Cr (VI) anions, removal rates are confirmed at pH 5, pH 7, and pH 9, with the highest removal rate (over 99 %) occurring at pH 7. When applied to an electrochemical system, the membranes also show a high removal rate (over 98 %). Finally, we validate the membrane's capacity to reduce copper levels to less than 0.01 ppm, even in industrial semiconductor wastewater, affirming its practical utility.
