Due to its low greenhouse gas emissions and high energy density, hydrogen is gaining traction as an alternative to fossil fuels. However, limitations on fresh water are a drawback to producing hydrogen from water electrolysis at large scale. The problem can be addressed by employing seawater, the most abundant water resource on Earth, for electrolysis and developing electrochemical catalysts that are resistant to chlorine corrosion. Herein, P, N co-doped carbons originating from ZIF were successfully synthesized and studied as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis. The P, N co-doped carbon acts as a protective layer that prevents the electrode from corrosion during seawater electrolysis and prevents phosphorus from dissolving. To optimize the electrochemical performance of CoFe LDH@PNC, the amount of ZIF, a precursor of P, N co-doped carbon, was finely controlled. It required low overpotentials of 234 and 330 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 44 and 255 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to achieve 10 and 1000 mA cm -2, respectively, in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, at exceptionally low voltages of 1.99 and 2.24 V, it achieves the industrially required current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm -2 for complete alkaline seawater splitting. Most notably, this catalyst exhibits outstanding long-term stability, withstanding 1,000 hours of constant operation at a high current density of 500 mA cm-2. By incorporating N-doped carbon with a high density of active sites, our work provides an innovative approach to enhance the stability of transition metal LDHs for seawater splitting applications.
