As recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have witnessed remarkable progress, there is a growing interest in leveraging AI for effective learning, particularly in the field of education. However, research on AI-based English education for middle school students is relatively scarce compared to elementary and university levels. Within the constraints of group learning in the public education system, individualized learning tailored to students' proficiency and interests is challenging to be realized. This gap highlights the need for research on alternative approaches, specifically exploring the use of AI-based English learning apps as supplementary tools in the form of task-oriented activities beyond regular class hours. Moreover, the primary competency in English education, communication skills, often loses its priority in middle school classrooms, where curriculum emphasis tends to emphasize reading comprehension and grammar-centric exam-focused teaching. This situation may contribute to students' apprehension about speaking English and impact their low satisfaction with oral communication skills learning. This study proposes the use of a smartphone app named 'Cake' as a supplementary tool to overcome the limitations of traditional group-based English speaking instruction in an efficient and practical manner. Unlike other studies that implement interventions during class time, this research explores the use of app-based task-oriented learning, allowing students and instructors to engage in speaking practice at their preferred times. This approach aims to address the challenges faced by both students and teachers, such as the pressure of curriculum progression and exam preparations, leading to a predominantly reading-focused classroom. The selected app, 'Cake,' is a media-based English learning app that utilizes video content, including movies, dramas, v-logs, etc. Students learn English by watching videos featuring high-interest figures such as popular YouTubers, actors, and singers, who use English in authentic contexts. The app provides scripted content with emphasized key expressions, followed by speech practice exercises, incorporating AI-based speech recognition for feedback. Additionally, learners can customize their learning experience based on their interests, proficiency levels, and preferred topics. This study was conducted for three weeks with 26 middle school students, divided into control and experimental groups of 13 students each. The control group engaged in traditional oral expression practice through repetitive dictation of English expressions, while the experimental group utilized the AI-based English learning app daily, learning from at least three English videos per day and writing a simple learning journal. Subsequently, the study compared the English speaking satisfaction and anxiety levels of both groups each through survey results. Quantitative research, employing Likert scales for English speaking satisfaction and anxiety, and qualitative research using open-ended question were conducted together. Regarding to the satisfaction with the use of the AI-based English learning app positively influenced perceived utility and attitudes among learners, particularly in the lower domains of satisfaction. However, there was no significant impact on anxiety levels. The qualitative analysis revealed predominantly positive opinions across various subdomains, such as language achievement, app simplicity and usefulness, and positive changes in the affective domain. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the potential of educational applications using AI technology on smartphones as effective supplementary tools in English education. The study suggests that such tools could address the limitations of group learning, offering a viable solution to enhance learning efficiency for students and teachers. Future research should explore the application of evolving AI technologies in diverse apps within the public education, surpassing the constraints of group learning in school settings.
