Objective: This study aimed to review the literature on interventions for lymphedema in breast cancer patients, analyze the characteristics and content of the interventions, and investigate their effectiveness in treating lymphedema.
Methods: The literatures for lymphedema in breast cancer patients were investigated from Korean databases including the Korea Studies Information Service System (KISS), KoreaMed, the Academic Education Institute e-article, the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), and the National Digital Library of Korea (NDSL). And we searched the literatures using the keywords of breast cancer, breast cancer patients, lymphatic massage, edema, exercise, physical therapy, manual lymphatic drainage. The intervention methods included massage, exercise, manual lymphatic drainage, programs, physical therapy, and myofascial release.
Results: Out of the 365 literature pieces, 22 articles were selected after excluding those that did not meet the selection criteria. The total number of participants in the studies was 615. Twenty-two studies were selected: eight case randomized controlled trials (RCTs), five case ingle-group pre-post comparative studies, six comparative studies with control groups, and three randomized crossover experimental studies. Among these, six papers used massage as the intervention method, followed by two papers using manual lymphatic drainage, four papers using physical therapy, two papers using programs, seven papers using exercise, and one paper using myofascial release. The most commonly used intervention method among them was exercise (n=7), followed by massage (n=6), physical therapy (n=4), manual lymphatic drainage (n=2), programs (n=2), and myofascial release (n=1). The research results confirmed not only a reduction in edema but also improvements in muscle strength, quality of life, shoulder joint range of motion, pain, and upper limb function.
Conclusion: The results of the review of 22 papers revealed various intervention methods, including massage, manual lymphatic drainage, physical therapy, programs, exercise, and myofascial release. Among the total of 22 literature pieces, excluding one study that utilized physical therapy as the intervention method, significant differences were observed in reducing edema. Additionally, there were significant differences in improving muscle strength, quality of life, shoulder joint range of motion, pain, and upper limb function.
