척수손상 환자가 겪는 어려움에는 어떠한 것들이 있는가? 척수손상 후 일차적으로 중추신경의 손상뿐 아니라 운동·감각기능의 상실, 방광·장 기능 조절 불능, 호르몬 분비 기능 이상 등이 복합적으로 작용하여 근력·대사의 저하, 체 성분 변화 등이 나타나며 욕창, 요로 감염, 과체중, 당뇨병, 관상동맥질환, 허혈성 심질환의 이환율이 높고 감염에 대한 내성이 저하되어, 이에 인한 사망이 흔한 것으로 알려져 있다 (Han & Lee, 2005; Kim & Shin, 2006; Kim, Yoon, Lee, Kwak, & Lee, 2007). 여기에 손상 후 감정 조절의 장애로 인해 사회 심리적 적응에도 어려움을 겪으며 자아개념의 혼란, 분노와 수치심, 강요된 무력감, 죄책감, 우울과 같은 부적응적 정서가 유발될 수 있다. 또한 사회로부터 고립, 직업 상실, 성적기능장애, 재정 문제, 안전에 대한 손상, 대인관계 손상, 만성통증, 독립성 상실과 관련된 심각한 상태를 극복해 나가야 한다. 이렇듯 척수손상은 신체기능 상실이라는 의미 외에 심리적 평형과 생존까지 위협받는 삶의 위기 상황이며, 영구적 후유증으로 인해 장애를 지닌 채 평생을 살아가야 하는 가족 및 사회에게 높은 부담을 지우는 질환이다 (Lee, Lee, Rhee, Shin, & Lim, 2008; Kim et al.
