Bovine mastitis, defined as an inflammation of the mammary gland, is usually associated with bacterial infection. Thus, treatment and control of mastitis relies primarily on antimicrobial therapy. This study investigated the bactericidal actions of silver ion against causing various bovine mastitis pathogens. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) and bactericidal activity times and concentrations of silver ion against pathogens were determined. The effect of silver ion on bacterial morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The MICs and MBCs of silver ion for various bacteria strains ranged from 1.9-15.6 ${\mu}g$/ml. SEM images indicated formation of a pit, distortion and disruption of cell walls in silver treated Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The results demonstrate that silver ion has a bactericidal capacity against causing various pathogens of bovine mastitis and suggest that silver ions may be exploitable as a therapeutic/preventative tool of bovine mastitis.

In this study examined the bactericidal actions of silver ion against causing various pathogens of bovine mastitis. MICs and MBCs of silver ion for various bacterial strains associated with bovine mastitis ranged from 1.
The objective of this study was to investigate the bactericidal actions of silver ion against bacterial bovine mastitis pathogens. Six reference strains were used (Staphylococcus aureus 305, S.
coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), and bactericidal action times were determined. Also, silver ion mediated morphologic change of the bacteria was revealed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
Bacterial culture 27958, Streptococcus agalactiae ATCC 13813, Escherichia coli O55, and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 1024) and five field strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermis, Streptococcus uberis, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) were used. Reference strains obtained from National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, Anyang, South Korea.
The objective of this study was to investigate the bactericidal actions of silver ion against bacterial bovine mastitis pathogens. Six reference strains were used (Staphylococcus aureus 305, S. epidermis ATCC 12228, Streptococcus uberis ATCC 27958, Str. agalactiae ATCC 13813, Escherichia coli O55, and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 1024) as well as five-field isolated strains identified as S. aureus, S. epidermis, St. uberis, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), and bactericidal action times were determined.
aureus were significantly damaged by the formation of a pit, distortion and disruption of cell wall. The results shown that silver ion can be to attach and penetrate into the bacterial cells that resulted in morphological distortion, particularly formation of a pit on outer surface of the bacteria.
