의생활이란? 의생활이란 인간의 생존이나 욕구 충족을 위해 자연의 물질에서 섬유나 옷감을 비롯하여 장식에 적합한 소재를 만들고 가공하여 다양하게 이용하거나 이를 복식으로 제작하여 활용하며 살아가는 것이다. 의생활의 섬유와 옷감, 장식소재, 복식 등을 만들고 활용하는 과정은 일상생활 속의 예술적 활동으로 이러한 삶에서 깨닫고 형성하게 된 과학, 기술, 역사, 전통, 제도, 사상, 가치, 현상 등은 생활 속에서 종합되고 교육 전수되며 의생활문화를 형성해 나간다.
복식과 의복디자인 관련 학과와 학회는 어떤 학문에 속하는가? 그러나 복식은 일상생활과 너무나 가까이 있기 때문에 복식이 얼마나 중요한 문화예술인가를 명확히 인식하지 못하고 있다[5]. 복식과 의복디자인 관련 학과와 학회는 학문 분류 상 자연분야와 예술분야에 속해 있으나「문화예술진흥법」제2조 제1항 제1호 규정에 복식과 의복디자인은 문화예술이라고 분류되어 있지 않다. 「문화예술교육지원법(법률 제10789호)」제2조에 따르면 전통의상과 침선·자수·염색 공예기술에 관한 교육은 법률상 문화예술교육에 해당되고 섬유와 직물, 의복의 디자인과 제작에 관한 기술은 고대로부터 국가적으로 매우 중요한 고도의 기술로 관리되어왔으며 현대사회에서도 국가의 주요 과학기술의 하나로 섬유와 직물, 의복의 디자인과 제작에 관한 기술은 문화예술영역의 기술로 분류되어 관리되고 있으나 가정과교육에서 수행해 온 한국복식에 대한 교육, 바느질이나 자수에 대한 교육에 대하여 이를 문화예술교육이라고 명명하거나 연관성을 부여하지 못하고 있어 이를 개선할 필요가 있다.
