아동에게 놀이란? 아동에게 놀이는 그들의 감정과 생각, 경험을 표현하도록 도와주는 매개체이다. 아동이 가장 좋아하고 몰두하는 것은 놀이이며 이를 통해 아동은 자신의 세계를 진실하게 창조해 내고 자신의 충족되지 않은 욕구나 불안과 갈등을 가상놀이나 환상적인 놀이를 통해 표현한다(Freud, 1946).
아동중심놀이치료는 어떤 철학을 두고 있는가? 놀이의 치료적 접근 중에서 아동과 치료자의 치료적 관계 속에서 아동이 심리적으로 성숙해지도록 돕는 접근으로 아동중심놀이치료가 있다. 아동중심놀이치료는 ‘아동이 무한한 잠재력과 회복력을 갖고 있고 성장과 성숙을 향해 노력하고 있다’는 기본 철학을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 치료자는 아동의 정서적 성장과 아동의 자신에 대한 믿음을 발견하고 촉진 시킬 수 있는 관계를 발전시키는데 관심을 집중시켜야 한다 (Rogers, 1951)고 하였다.
