사회적 능력이 긍정적으로 발달한 유아는 어떤 특징이 있는가? 이처럼 유아기는 본격적인 사회와의 접촉을 통하여 더욱 폭넓은 인간관계를 경험하게 되는 시기로(Lee, 2011), 사회적 능력은 유아기 발달에 중요한 과제로 그 중요성이 강조되고 있다(Eisenberg, Padada, & Liew, 2001). 즉, 유아기의 사회적 능력은 이후 발달에 있어 적응과 관련이 있는 것으로 보고되고 있는데(Parke & Asher, 1987), 사회적 능력이 긍정적으로 발달한 유아는 또래와의 원만한 관계를 유지하여(Rhee, 2000) 놀이를 주도하며 또래에게 인기가 많다. 반면, 유아가 6세까지 최소한의 사회적 능력이 발달되지 못할 경우 유아기, 아동기 청소년기의 낮은 수행 및 비행, 우울 등의 부적응을 초래하게 되고 성인이 되어서도 대인관계에 영향을 미치는(Kim, 2006) 등 유아기 뿐만 아니라 전 생애 발달과정동안 부적응을 초래할 가능성이 있다(Katz & McCellan, 1992).
사회적 능력이란 무엇인가? 사회적 능력은 다양한 상황 속에서 타인과의 상호작용을 통하여 환경에 적응하며, 효과적으로 대인관계의 목적을 달성하는 적응능력을 의미하며(Choi & Kim, 2005), 유능한 사구성원으로 적응해 가는 능력(Kim, 2003), 환경과의 상호작용을 통하여 효율적으로 사회적 목적을 달성하며 사회적으로 성장하고 사회활동을 영위하는데 필요한 능력으로 정의할 수 있다(Dodge, McClaskey, & Feldman, 1985). 따라서 유아에게 사회적 능력이란 유능한 사회구성원이 되고 사회적 목적을 달성하는데 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다(Noh, 2004).
