지금까지의 노년기 정신건강에 관한 선행연구들은 노년기의 다양한 심리적 증상 문제를 전체적으로 살펴보았다고 할 수 없는 이유는? 한편, 노년기의 정신건강에 관한 선행연구들을 살펴보면, 정신건강 변인으로 주로 우울을 다루었으며(Kim, 2004; Kim et al., 2011; Yoo & Sung, 2009), 불안은 죽음과 관련하여 일부분 살펴보았을 뿐(Lee et al., 2010; Yeo & Kim, 2005) 그 외 긍정적 차원으로는 생활만족도, 삶의 만족도, 행복감, 성공적 노후 등을 부정적 차원으로는 대부분이 우울만을 측정하였다(Cho & Choi, 2011; Jeong, 2012; Son, 2005; Song &Marks, 2006). 그러나 임상적으로 노년기의 우울은 단지 우울증만이 나타나는 것이 아니라 우울로 인한 신체적 증상의 호소와 함께 불안증이 동반되어 나타나며, 신체적 증상 역시 우울, 불안과 깊은 연관이 있다(Elkowitz & Virginia, 1980).따라서 지금까지의 노년기 정신건강에 관한 선행연구들은 노년기의 다양한 심리적 증상 문제를 전체적으로 살펴보았다고 할 수 없다.
최근의 노인문제는 어떠한 것들이 있는가? 노인들 중 우울을 경험하는 사람은 100명 중 8명에 이를 정도로 매우 흔하며, 불안증 또한 점차 증가하고 있는 추세에 있다(국민일보, 2010, 10, 25). 과거의 주요 노인문제는 빈곤, 사회적 고립, 질병 등이었으나, 최근의 노인문제는 자살, 외로움, 소외, 우울, 불안, 스트레스 등 정신건강에 관한 문제가 심각하게 떠오르고 있다. 노년기의 정신건강 문제는 결국에는 남아있는 나머지 노후의 전반적인 삶의 질에 영향을 미치기 때문에 인구 고령화 시대로 다가감에 따라 노인의 정신건강 문제에 대한 관심은 사회적 문제를 넘어 국가적 문제로 대두될 것으로 예상된다.
