학대받은 아동의 정서조절능력을 살펴본 결과는? | 첫째, 학대받은 아동은 정서지능의 하위영역인 정서인식, 정서표현, 감정이입, 정서조절에서 모두 일반아동과 현저한 차이를 보였다. 이는 아동의 정서발달에 중요한 역할을 하는 부모(Salovey & Mayer, 1990)에 의한 학대가 아동의 정서지능발달에 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인할 수 있는 결과이다. 학대받은 아동들은 타인의 정서를 적절히 인식하는데 어려움(Pollak et al., 2000; Hwang, 2006; Kim, 2009)이 있을 뿐 아니라 정서를 조절하여 표현하는 것에도 어려움을 경험할 것으로 보인다. 아동의 정서 발달이 부모자녀관계 속에서 시작(Salovey & Mayer, 1996)되며 부모의 양육태도와 행동이 아동의 정서에 영향(Gottman & Katz, 1989; Park & Park, 2002; Chae, 2010)을 주게 된다는 점을 감안할 때 부모에 의한 학대는 아동의 정서지능에 발달을 심각하게 저해한다고 볼 수 있다. 정서지능이 대인관계 뿐 아니라 학업 및 직장생활 등 아동의 인생 전반에 걸쳐 중요한 요소(Salovey & Mayer, 1990)인 만큼 학대로 정서지능의 발달이 저해된 아동들이 사회적 상황에 적응하는데 많은 어려움이 발생할 수 있다는 것을 예상할 수 있다. 따라서 학대받은 아동의 사회적응을 돕기 위하여 그들의 정서지능 발달을 위한 교육과 상담 등 개입이 필요할 것으로 생각된다. 둘째, 학대받은 아동과 일반아동이 정서유발상황에서 어떻게 반응하지를 확인하여 그들의 정서조절전략을 분석한 결과 일반 아동이 정서조절전략을 적절히 사용하는 것에 비해 학대받은 아동은 효과적인 전략을 사용하지 못하여 적절히 대처하는 능력이 낮은 것(Mash, Johnston, & Kovitz, 1983)을 알 수 있었다. 학대받은 아동의 반응을 분석한 결과 폭력적이거나 강압적인 반응, 정서를 조절하지 않고 상황에 부적절하게 그대로 드러내는 반응, 보복하겠다는 반응과 같은 독특한 특성이 나타났다. 학대받은 아동은 이러한 특성으로 인해 정서를 상황에 맞게 조절하지 못하여 역기능적으로 반응(Shields & Cicchetti, 1998)함으로써 학대의 후유증으로 거론되는 공격성(Choi, 1989)이나 부적응 행동(Kim, 1994)을 보이게 되는 것이다. 기존의 연구들은 학대받은 아동의 부적응 문제에 집중하여 그들의 공격성이나 부적응과 같은 외현화된 행동특성을 학대의 후유증이라고 결론지었다. 그러나 본 연구를 통해 학대받은 아동이 자신의 정서를 적절히 조절하는 전략을 사용하지 못하여 부적절한 행동을 하게 된다는 점을 발견한 것은 의미 있는 결과라고 하겠다. 이는 학대받은 아동들의 부모가 자신의 정서를 조절하여 대처하기보다는 자신의 기분에 따라 충동적으로 자녀를 학대하는 상황을 반복적으로 경험한 아동들이 정서를 조절하는 전략을 익히거나 사용하는 것은 어려웠을 것이다. 이처럼 학대받은 아동들은 가정에서 정서조절과 관련된 경험을 하지 못함으로써 가정 밖의 정서를 조절해야할 상황에서도 강압적이거나 보복하는 반응 또는 정서를 그대로 드러내는 반응 등으로 정서를 나타내는 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 학대받은 아동과 일반아동의 정서조절동기에 대하여 연구한 결과 일반아동이 적절한 동기를 가지고 있는 반면 학대받은 부적절한 동기를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 학대받은 아동들은 주로 가지고 있는 동기는 두 가지로 자신의 정서에 초점을 맞추거나 또는 타인과 상황을 탓하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 학대받은 아동이 정서를 적절히 조절하지 못하는 이유를 설명해주는 중요한 자료이다. 우선 정서에 초점을 맞춘 동기는 심리적 부적응을 보이는 사람이 자신의 정서에 초점을 맞추어 대처한다는 Folkman(1984)의 주장과 부분적으로 일치하는 결과로써 학대받은 아동은 정서조절결과를 기대하고 동기를 조절하기 보다는 지금 당장의 정서적 경감(Runtz & Schallow, 1997)을 하기 위한 반응을 주로 보이는 것이 확인되었다. 이는 학대받은 아동들의 부모가 자신의 분노를 해결하기 위하여 자녀를 학대했던 것과도 관련이 있을 것으로 보인다. 또한 아동 스스로 학대를 받으며 많은 부정적인 정서들을 경험하였기 때문에 작은 정서 자극도 견디지 못하고 이를 해소하는데 집중하여 정서를 조절하기 어려울 것으로 보인다. 더불어 정서조절에 있어서 상황 자체보다 인지적 평가가 더 중요한데(Quiggle et al., 1992) 학대받은 아동들은 상대의 의도를 적대적으로 평가(Crick & Dodge, 1996)하여 상황을 외부의 탓으로 돌림으로써 자신의 정서를 조절해야한다고 느끼지 못함으로써 정서를 조절하지 않게 되는 것이다. 이를 통해 돌봄을 받아야할 부모에게서 받은 학대로 인해 아동들이 세상을 부정적으로 지각하고 적대적으로 바라보고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같이 학대로 인하여 아동의 전반적인 정서능력 뿐 아니라 사회적 상황에서 정서적 능력을 사용하는데 중요한 정서조절능력의 부족이 확인 된 바 학대받은 아동의 정서적 특성에 관심을 가지고 이에 적절한 개입이 필요하다. |
