동아시아 대기질을 이해하기 위해 어떤 다양한 지상∙항공∙선박관측 등의 국제적 campaign들이 이루어지고 있는가? 이러한 대내외적인 요구에 부합한 보다 정밀한 대기질 감시와 예측을 위해서는 정확한 4차원 대기질 자료의 산출이 요구된다. 이러한 노력의 일환으로 동아시아 대기질을 이해하기 위해서 PEM-West A&B (Pacific Exploratory Mission-West A&B), ACE-Asia (Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment), TRACE-P (Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific) 등의 다양한 지상∙항공∙선박관측 등의 국제적 campaign들이 이루어져 왔으며, 국내에서는 국립환경과학원의 주도하에 다양한 목적에 부합하는 대기질 측정망을 구성하려는 노력들이 있어 왔다. 이러한 관측 자료들은 정확성이 높다는 장점이 있지만, 시∙공간적인 해상도가 매우 낮기 때문에 4차원의 정밀한 대기질 감시 및 예측에 적합하지가 않다.
통합 대기질 모델링 시스템의 정확도를 개선하기 위한 전략은? “통합 대기질 모델링 시스템”의 정확도를 개선하기 위한 전략은 크게 두 가지로 나누어질 수 있는데, 이는 (1) 대기질 모델 자체의 성능 향상을 위한 지속적인 “대기질 모델 개발(air quality model development)”과 (2) 대기질 모델링과 연관된 배출장 및 배출 모델링 개선, 기상 모델(링) 개선, 지상관측 및 인공위성 관측자료 활용 등 “관련/연관 기술 개선/개발”을 들 수 있다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 인식 하에 통합 대기질 모델링 시스템을 구성하는 관련 요소의 개선 및 통합 과정 개선을 통해 통합 대기질 모델링 기술의 개선 방안을 제시하기 위하여, 대기질 모델링의 관련 요소 기술별 현황 및 발전 방향에 대해서 기술하고, 이들 요소들을 이용하여 통합 모델링 체계를 구축하는 기술적 방안들을 논의하고자 한다.
