Worsley(2011/ 2012)는 ‘더럽다’는 의미의 ‘Grungy’에서 이 장르의 이름이 생겨났다고 했다. 그런지 음악은 Sub Pop 레코드를 통해 인지도를 넓혀 나가다가 1990년대 초반 Nirvana의 앨범 ‘Nevermind’가 큰 인기를 얻으면서 전 대중에게 알려지게 되었다(Strong, 2011).
그런지 스타일에 대한 연구실정은 어떠한가? 이렇듯 그런지 스타일이 하이 패션에서 지속적인 영향력을 행사하고 있지만, 이에 대한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. Chung and Geum(2005)이 1990년대부터 2003년까지의 뮤지션, 스트리트, 하이 패션에 나타난 그런지 스타일을, Kim(2011)이 2001년부터 2010년까지 하이 패션의 그런지 스타일을 연구했지만, 1990년대와 2000년 이후의 그런지 스타일을 비교하지는 않았고, 연구자가 그런지의 특성을 보인다고 생각하는 컬렉션을 임의로 추출하였기 때문에 사례 선정에 주관성이 많이 개입되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 미국 Vogue 잡지와 패션전문일간지 Women’s Wear Daily(WWD)의 기사를 바탕으로 그런지 스타일을 표현한 컬렉션을 추출하여 1990년대와 2000년 이후 패션 비평가와 리테일러들이 그런지 컬렉션을 보는 태도가 어떻게 변화했는지 살펴보았으며, 하이 패션에서 나타난 그런지 스타일의 조형성 변화를 파악하였다.
