PBL은 학습자에게 어떤 학습 환경을 제공합니까? 실제 PBL 과정에서 학습자는 학습 본연의 가치를 인식함으로써 스스로 목표를 정하며 학습한 내용을 꾸준히 생활 속에 실천하고 적용하려는 의지를 강화한다. 또한 PBL은 획일화된 방식이나 답만을 강요하지 않고 자율적이며 책임감을 강조하는 학습 환경을 제공함으로써 학생들의 적극적 참여를 유도할 뿐 아니라, 학습자 스스로 지식을 축적해 가기 때문에 습득한 지식의 기억과 전이 에도 효과적임을 제시하고 있다[41]. 이러한 이점에 따라 PBL은 처음 시도되었던 의학계를 넘어 인문사회, 경영, 공학에 이르기까지 다양한 학문영역에서 활발히 시도되고 있다.
대학에서 교수자들이 PBL 수업을 개발하고 실시하는 것이 어려운 이유는? 그러나 대학에서 교수자들이 PBL 수업을 개발하고 실시하는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다[39]. 그 이유는 첫째, 교수자가 수업을 설계하고 운영 및 평가하는데 상당한 노력과 시간이 요구되기 때문이다. 둘째, PBL은 다양한 교수 상황에 따라 수업의 진행도 달라져야 하는데 반해 아직까지 다학제적 관점에 적합한 여러 버전의 PBL 수업 설계 안내와 지침이 부족한 실정이다. 즉 아무리 다른 조건에서 효과 있는 수업일지라도 그대로 자신의 수업에 적용시킨다는 것은 불가능한 일이므로 전공과 수업환경에 맞게 각기 다르게 접근해야하기 때문이다.
