간호사는 다문화 여성과의 어떠한 어려움을 경험하고 있는가? 간호사들도 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 대상자를 돌보는데 어려움을 겪기는 마찬가지이다 문화와 언어가 다양한 만큼 간호사는 다양한 문화적 지식, 정보, 자원으로 이들을 돌볼 수 있는(Lowe & Archibald, 2009) 문화역량 수준을 갖추어야 함에도 불구하고 그렇지 못하므로 대상자의 건강간호 요구수준을 맞출 수가 없다(Park, 2011). 간호사는 다문화 여성과의 의사소통 문제, 영양섭취 및 개인위생습관, 종교와 영적 행위로 인해 많은 어려움을 경험하고 있다(Festini, Focardi, Bisogni, Mannini, & Neri, 2009; Phiri, Dietsch, & Bonner, 2010). 뿐만 아니라 다문화 출산여성의 증가에도 불구하고 이들을 돌보는 한국 간호사의 간호에 대한 경험은 밝혀진 바가 거의 없으며, 이 같은 상황에 있는 간호사의 어려움을 중재할 만한 책이나 연구도 드문 편이다.
다문화 여성이 필요로 하는 간호 요구와 이에 적합한 간호를 충분히 알지도 제공하지도 못하고 있는 이유는? 사실 이주노동자와 국제결혼이민자 수의 갑작스런 증가로 간호사들은 많은 다문화 대상자를 자주 만나게 되었지만 교과과정을 통해 문화 간호에 대한 교육을 받은 적이 없어 문화이해를 바탕으로 한 간호를 수행할 준비가 부족하다. 따라서 다문화 여성이 필요로 하는 간호요구와 이에 적합한 간호를 충분히 알지도 제공하지도 못하고 있다(Park, 2011).
