본 연구의 목적은 부모의 심리 및 행동통제와 청소년의 자존감 및 내 외현문제 간에 어떤 상관이 있는지, 그리고 청소년 개인의 자존감이 부모통제와 이들의 내 외현문제 간을 매개하는지 알아보는 것이다. 중학교와 고등학교 1, 2, 3학년 학생을 대상으로 부/모 심리 및 행동통제, 자존감, 그리고 내현 및 외현문제를 측정하였다. 총 355명(남: 171명, 여:184명; 중학생: 170명, 고등학생: 185명)의 자료가 분석되었다. 부모심리통제는 낮을수록, 행동통제는 높을수록 청소년의 자존감이 높고 내 외현문제는 많은 것으로 나타났으며, 자존감이 높을수록 내 외현문제도 많은 것으로 나타났다. 자존감은 부모심리통제와 내현문제 간을 부분매개, 부모행동통제와 내현 및 외현문제 간을 완전매개 하는 것으로 분석되었다. 우리나라의 가족주의 문화나 입시위주의 경쟁적 교육환경이 이러한 결과에 영향을 미쳤을 가능성을 제기하였으며, 바람직한 부모양육행동에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study is two-fold. One is to investigate the relationship between parental psychological/behavioral control and adolescents' self-esteem and their internalized/externalized problems. The other is to examine if self-esteem mediate the effects of parental control upon adolescents' internalized/externalized problems. Total of 355 girls(52%) and boys(48%) from middle(48%) and high school(52%) were participated. Results indicated that adolescents' self-esteem, and internalized/externalized problems were negatively related to parental psychological control, and positively related to parental behavioral control. It was also found that self-esteem partially mediated the effects of parental psychological control upon adolescents' internalized problems, and completely mediated the effects of parental behavioral control on their internalized as well as externalized problems. Some implications for advisable parenting behaviors were discussed.

본 연구에서는 먼저, 부모의 심리 및 행동통제와 청소년의 자존감 및 내·외현문제 간에는 어떤 상관이 있는지 알아 본 후, 청소년 개인의 자존감이 부모심리 및 행동통제와 청소년의 내현 및 외현문제 간에 어떤 매개작용을 하는지 분석하고자 한다.
제안 방법
외현문제의 측정은 “나는 음주, 흡연, 또는 약물(질병 치료 목적 제외)을 사용한다”, “나는 수업을 빼먹거나, 학교에 무단결석을 한다”, “나는 남에게 나쁜 말을 하거나 욕설을 한다”, “나는 가출을 시도한 적이 있다” 등 총 4문항을 사용하였다. 앞 3문항은 Barber 등 (1994)의 연구에서 청소년의 외현문제 측정에 쓰였던 문항들을 본 연구자가 번역한 것이며[6], “나는 가출을 시도한 적이 있다”는 본 연구에서 추가로 포함된 것이다. Likert식 6점 척도였으며, 점수가 높을수록 내현문제나 외현문제가 더 많은 것으로 해석된다.
대상 데이터
총 404부의 설문지를 배부하여 377부를 회수하였으나, 불성실한 응답지 22부를 제외하고 총 355부를 최종 분석하였다. 남학생이 171명(48%), 여학생은 184명(52%)이었으며, 중학생이 170명(47.9%), 고등학생이 185명(52.1%)이었다. 응답자의 92%(326명)는 부모 모두와 함께 살고 있었으며, 한 부모 가족의 경우는 20명(5.6%)정도였다.

데이터처리
SPSS Win. 22.0 프로그램을 활용하였으며, 각 변인의 평균과 표준편차 등 기술통계와 상관분석(Pearson's'r'), Baron과 Kenny(1986)의 회귀분석을 이용한 매개효과분석을 실시하였다.
이론/모형
Shek(2006)이 개발한 중국 아버지 심리적 통제 척도(The Chinese paternal psychological Control Scale: CppCS)와 중국 어머니 심리적 통제 척도(The Chinese Maternal psychological Control Scale: CMpCS)를 본 연구자가 번안하여 사용하였다[30]. 부/모가 자녀에게 행할 수 있는 5가지 심리적 통제(즉, 개인적 감정이나 경험의 불인정, 언어적 표현의 강요, 인신공격, 애정철수, 지나친 단속 등)에 대해 각 2문항씩, 총 10개 문항으로 구성되어 있다.
김문주(1988)가 번안한 Rosenberg(1965)의 자존감 척도를 사용하였다(심리척도 핸드북 I, PP. 177). 총 11문항이었고, Likert식 6점 척도였다.
내현문제는 아동 행동 체크리스트–자기보고(the Child Behavior Checklist-Youth Self-Report(Achenbach와 Edelbrock, 1981)의 문항들 중 내적, 심리적 문제를 재는 문항들인 “나는 외로움을 느낀다”, 나는 혼란스럽고, 어찌할 바를 모르겠다“, “나는 불행하고, 슬프고, 우울하다” 등 3문항을 사용하였다[35].
부와 모에 대해 따로 답변하도록 하였으며, Likert식 4점 척도였고, 점수가 높을수록 부/모의 행동통제가 높은 것으로 해석한다. 본 문항들은 Stattin & Kerr(2000)의 연구에서 자녀에 대한 부모의 감독행동(monitoring)측정에 사용한 문항들이다[31]. 이들의 연구에서 부와 모를 구분하지 않고 측정한 신뢰도는 Cronbach's α=.
성능/효과
셋째, 부모심리통제와 청소년의 내현문제 간, 부모행동통제와 내현 및 외현문제 간을 자존감이 각각 부분 또는 완전매개 한다는 본 연구의 결과는 부모양육행동이 직접적으로 청소년의 우울이나 문제행동으로 연결된다기보다는 청소년의 자존감을 통해서 연결된다고 한 Wang 등의 연구결과와는 부분적으로 일치하는 것이다[22]. 그러나 이러한 연결과정에서 높은 자존감이 오히려 내·외현문제를 증가시키는 것으로 나타난 본 연구의 분석결과는 청소년의 자존감과 내․외현문제행동의 관련성을 다루고 있는 다른 연구들과 상반되는 것이며 이에 대한 논의가 필요하다[17,18,19].
둘째, 부모심리통제가 높을수록 청소년의 내·외현문제는 적어지지만 자존감도 낮아지는 반면, 부모행동통제는 높을수록 청소년의 내·외현문제는 많아지지만, 자존감도 높아진다는 분석결과를 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 청소년의 자존감은 낮추지만 내·외현문제를 줄이는 것(즉 심리통제)이 바람직한 양육행동인지, 아니면 내·외현문제가 약간 높아지더라도 자존감을 높이는(즉 행동통제) 것이 바람직한 양육행동인지에 대한 논쟁을 야기한다.
셋째, 부모심리통제와 청소년의 내현문제 간, 부모행동통제와 내현 및 외현문제 간을 자존감이 각각 부분 또는 완전매개 한다는 본 연구의 결과는 부모양육행동이 직접적으로 청소년의 우울이나 문제행동으로 연결된다기보다는 청소년의 자존감을 통해서 연결된다고 한 Wang 등의 연구결과와는 부분적으로 일치하는 것이다[22]. 그러나 이러한 연결과정에서 높은 자존감이 오히려 내·외현문제를 증가시키는 것으로 나타난 본 연구의 분석결과는 청소년의 자존감과 내․외현문제행동의 관련성을 다루고 있는 다른 연구들과 상반되는 것이며 이에 대한 논의가 필요하다[17,18,19].

후속연구
본 연구의 자료는 서울과 인천지역에서만 표집 되었기 때문에 지역적 제한성이 있고, 변인측정을 청소년 자신의 지각으로 하였기 때문에 반응에 개인의 주관성이나 사회적 바람직성이 개입되었을 가능성이 있다는 점에서 결과를 일반화하는 데는 한계가 있을 것으로 보인다. 또한, 사용된 자료가 횡단적 자료이기 때문에 본 연구의 결과가 청소년기 발달과정에서 나타나는 일시적인 현상인지에 대해서는 종단적 자료를 통해 확인할 필요가 있다는 점을 지적하면서 후속연구를 기대해 본다.

많은 선행연구들도 자율성을 보장하고, 확고한 통제, 합리적 설명과 지지, 그리고 명확한 의사소통을 하는 부모행동이 자녀의 자존감을 높이며, 과도한 벌이나 죄책감 유발, 사랑의 철회 등의 부모행동이 자녀의 자존감을 낮춘다는 일관된 결과를 보고해 왔다[10, 13, 14]. 청소년의 내․외현 문제행동과 자존감의 관련성을 다루고 있는 많은 연구들은 높은 자존감이 학업성취, 사회적 유능성, 좋은 인간관계, 개인의 성공이나 행복 등 친사회적 기능을 높이는 결과를 가져오며, 비행이나, 학업실패, 이른 성(性)적 접촉, 우울 등 개인의 내․외현적 문제행동에 연루되는 것을 막는 역할을 한다고 밝히고 있다[15,16,17,18].
부모양육행동에 따라 청소년의 개인의 자존감은 어떻게 변화하는가?
한편, 부모양육행동과 청소년의 문제행동의 관계를 다루고 있는 Wang 등은 부모양육행동은 직접적으로 청소년의 우울이나 문제행동으로 연결되기보다 청소년의 개인의 자존감을 통해서 연결된다고 주장 한다[22]. 부모의 지지(support)와 감독(monitoring) 같은 긍정적 양육태도는 청소년으로 하여금 자신에 대한 긍정적 자기관(즉 높은 자존감)을 갖도록 하여 우울과 같은 내현문제에 연결되지 않도록 하는데 반해, 거부(rejection)나 강압(coercion)과 같은 부모행동은 청소년들로 하여금 자기 자신에 대해 부정적인 평가(즉 낮은 자존감)를 하도록 하여 우울증상에 취약하게 만든다는 것이다[23]. 실제로 몇몇 선행연구들은 부모의 거부적 행동이 아동의 자존감을 낮추고, 그에 따라 우울로 연결될 수 있다고 하여 부모행동과 아동의 우울 간에 자존감의 매개 가능성을 제안하였고, 부모의 수용/거부, 자율성 지지/심리적 통제, 확고한/느슨한 통제행동과 아동의 우울 간에 아동의 자기가치(self-worth)에 대한 지각이 부분적으로 매개작용을 한다는 연구도 있다[24, 14].
