Rothbart 기질 척도의 경우, 이론적으로 아동기 이전은 크게 세 가지 상위요인 즉, 외향성(extraversion/ surgency), 부정적 정서(negative affectivity), 의도적 통제 (effortful control; 영아기는 지향/조절능력(Orienting/ regulation)이라 명명함)로, 청소년기와 성인기는 각각 네 가지 상위요인 즉, 외향성, 부정적 정서, 친화성 (affirmativeness), 의도적 통제 그리고 외향성, 부정적 정서, 민감성 지향(orienting sensitivity), 의도적 통제로 나뉘어져 있다. 그 중에서도 본 연구에서 타당화 작업을 수행할 유아기 기질 평가 척도인 CBQ를 자세히 살펴보면, 외향성과 부정적 정서 요인은 반응성에 해당하며, 의도적 통제 요인은 반응성의 조절에 해당한다.
EAS모델의 구성요소인 정서성, 활동성, 사회성이 의미하는 것은? 이 모델에서 정서성이란 정서적 반응의 강도로서 반응이 전혀 없는 상태에서 대단히 강한 흥분 상태까지의 다양한 정서적 반응의 강도를 의미하며, 여기에서 나타나는 개인차는 유전적인 차이에서 기인한다고 본다. 반면, 활동성은 무기력한 상태부터 열광하는 상태까지에 이르는 유아가 일상생활에서 보이는 행동의 속도와 강도를 의미한다. 마지막으로 사회성은 유아가 양육자가 아닌 다른 사람들과 함께 있는 것을 선호하는 정도를 의미한다(Buss & Plomin, 1984). Buss와 Plomin은 이 EAS 모델에 기초 하여 PTQ보다 사용가능 연령이 넓은 1~9세 아동의 기질을 측정하는 20문항으로 된 부모보고용 기질 척도 (Emotionality, Activity, Sociability: EAS)를 개발하였다.
