기본적으로 탄약을 구성하는 것은 무엇인가? 새로운 소각법이 시행되면서 기존의 처리법에 비해 가장 크게 달라진 것은 탄체에서 화약을 분리하고자 하는 시도가 선행되었다는 것이다. 기본적으로 탄약은 크게 화약, 탄체, 신관과 같은 3가지로 이루어지는데 처리하고자 하는 대상은 화약부분이다. 그 전의 방법들이 화약뿐만이 아니라 탄체와 신관을 한 번에 처리했다면, 새로운 소각법은 탄에서 화약을 추출하여 화약부분만을 처리하고자 했다.
저장탄약 신뢰성평가에서 정비 불가 판정을 받은 탄약을 소각했을 시에 갖는 문제점은 무엇인가? 저장탄약 신뢰성 평가란 군사 목적으로 사용되는 탄약에 대해서 총 수명 기간 동안의 저장 신뢰성을 측정하는 평가로써 국방기술품질원을 통해 시행되고 있다. 위 평가에서 정비 불가 판정을 받은 탄약의 경우 소각 처리를 시키고 있는데, 이러한 소각 처리의 경우 대량으로 처리할 시 환경적으로 문제를 일으킬 요소가 있으며, 탄약 내부의 화약을 회수 할 수 없다는 점에서 경제성이 떨어진다는 평가를 받고 있다. 현재 보유연한이 지나가는 탄약의 양이 증가하고 있는 추세이므로 앞서 말한 소각처리를 대체할 친환경 기술의 개발이 촉구된다[2].
