본 연구는 한국의 다문화가정 청소년이 마주하고 있는 사회적, 문화적 요인이 그들의 일상 정보 행태, 특히 미디어 사용을 통한 정보 행태에 미치는 영향의 양상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 13세에서 18세 사이의 다문화가정 청소년 11명을 대상으로 정보요구기록지, 미디어 이용에 관한 설문조사, 두 차례에 걸친 심층 면담이 실시되었으며, 이를 통해 얻은 자료를 바탕으로 다문화가정 청소년의 일상 문제 상황과 미디어를 통한 정보 요구 해결의 양상을 다각적인 시각에서 분석하였다. 다문화가정 청소년이 일상의 문제 상황에서 필요로 하는 정보의 주제는 학업, 여가, 외모, 자기개발, 생활, 진로 등이었으며, 특히 학업과 여가에 대한 정보 요구가 압도적으로 높았다. 본 연구에 참가한 다문화가정 청소년들은 정보 요구의 해결을 위해 능동적으로 미디어를 사용하고 있었다. 이들에게 미디어는 심리적 도피처이자 안식처였고, 자기표현을 위한 도구였으며, 지식과 생활 정보를 얻을 수 있는 해답의 책이자 여가 시간의 동반자였다. 본 연구에서 제시된 미디어 이용 관련 방안들은 추후 도서관에서 다문화가정 자녀를 대상으로 한 서비스를 기획하는데 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

McKenzie (2003)는 사회적 상호작용에 바탕을 둔 ELIS 모델을 제안하며 일상생활에서 정보를 선택하고 정보를 추구하는 과정에서 인지적인 요인보다 사회적 관계나 사회적 맥락이 더 중요한 영향을 끼칠 수 있다고 제안하였다. 한국의 다문화가정 청소년들은 한국 사회에서 비주류로 인식되고 있으며 선주민 한국인 부모를 둔 청소년들과는 다른 사회적, 문화적 환경 속에서 살아가고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사회적, 문화적 맥락에 중점을 둔 ELIS 모델을 기반으로하여 다문화가정 청소년들만의 독특한 정보 행태의 양상을 살펴보고자 하였다.
청소년들이 정체감 위기를 느낌으로써 어떤 것들을 정립하는가? 보호자의 전적인 도움이 필요한 아동기에서 자립할 수 있는 성인기로 전환하는 과도기적 단계에 있는 청소년들은 자신이 누구인지에 대한 해답을 얻기 위해 자기 자신과 세상에 대해 수많은 질문을 던진다. 청소년들은 긍정적 자기평가와 부정적 자기평가 양극단 사이에서 갈등하는 혼란스러운 정체감 위기(identity crisis)를 겪으며 자신만의 역할 정체성, 성적 정체성, 민족 정체성 등을 정립해가게 된다(Erikson 1968; Gross 1987). 이처럼 청소년기는 누구에게나 쉽지 않은 시기이다.
