자본주의 4.0시대는 무엇을 목표로 하는가? 리프킨이 주장하는 것은 사회가 물건이나 제품을 소유하는 것에서 이용하는 것으로 변화하고 있다는 것이고 이는 곧 물질 기반의 자본주의가 변화되어야 함을 강조하는 것이다. 즉, 자본주의는 새로운 패러다임으로써 그 동안의 승자독식, 경쟁, 성과지향과 같은 가치를 벗어나 사회에서 공생과 조화를 추구하고 시장참여자의 사회적 책임을 요구함으로써 다 같이 행복한 성장을 목표로 하는 자본주의 4.0시대로 변화를 추구하는 것이다[30].
