의도적 통제는 어떻게 발달하고 성숙되는가? 의도적 통제는 타고난 기질적 요인을 토대로 사회 환경에 영향을 받아 발달하고(Eisenberg et al., 2003; Zhou et al., 2007),뇌의 전두엽 발달의 영향을 받아 연령 증가에 따라 지속적으로 성숙된다(Rothbart & Posner, 2005). 의도적 통제는 그 자체를 정서 조절능력이라고 볼 수는 없고, 자극에 대한 충동적인 우세한 반응을 자발적이고 계획적으로 억제하면서 바람직한 방향의 정서와 행동을 활성화하도록 조절하는 과정에서 작동되는 실행기능이라고도 볼 수 있다(Eisenberg & Spinrad, 2004;Garstein & Fagot, 2003; Kochanska & Knaack, 2003).
