Purpose: This descriptive study aims to analyze the effects of the satisfaction level in the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, conflicts between them, acculturative stress and stress coping strategies on elderly depression in multi-cultural families. Methods: The survey was conducted on 89 mothers-in-law, aged 65 or older, in multi-cultural families with a foreign daughter-in-law. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, and then were used to conduct t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analyses using the statistical program SPSS 21.0. Results: This study found several factors contributing to depression of mothers-in-law in multi-cultural families. Those factors include living alone without a spouse, poor health, a high level of perceived discrimination and a passive reaction in terms of stress coping strategies. Conclusion: A sense of discrimination perceived by the mothers-in-law having a foreign daughter-in-law implies that the people around them and the community should make efforts to reject distorted perspectives and remove prejudice against foreign daughters-in-law. In addition, the mothers-in-law should receive education and training to use more active and positive stress coping strategies in a stressful situation with the foreign daughter-in-law.

15, 검정력 95%를 유지하는데 필요한 표본수는 74명으로 산출되었다. 탈락률을 고려하여 92명을 대상으로 자료 수집을 하였고, 응답에 불완전한 설문지 3부를 제외하고 총 89부를 본 연구의 자료로 활용하였다.

이론/모형

본 연구에서 스트레스 대처전략은 Kim(1997)의 노년기 스트레스와 대처방안에 따른 생활만족도 연구의 대처방안척도를 사용하였다. 총 16문항으로 종교, 사회적 지원 5문항, 적극적 태도 6문항, 소극적 태도 5문항으로 구성되어 있다.
본 연구에서는 노인우울증의 지역사회 역학조사용으로 1971년 미국 정신보건연구원(Radloff, 1977)에 의해 개발된 도구를 한국판 CES-D로 수정․보완한 도구(Cho & Kim, 1993)를 사 용하였다. 불면증, 식욕부진 등의 신체적 증상 및 무력감, 절망감 같은 노인우울한 정서 등의 총 20개 문항으로 구성된 자기보고형으로 0점에서 3점까지 척도로 구성되어 있으며, 총 점은 60점이다.
본 연구에서는 다문화가정 시어머니의 문화적응스트레스를 파악하기 위해 Sandhu와 Asrabadi(1994)가 개발한 ‘Acculturative Stress for International Student’에 기초하여 Lee(1996)가 문화 이입과정 스트레스척도를 개발하였고, 이를 Lee(2007)가 다문 화가정 시어머니를 대상으로 문화적응스트레스 척도를 개발한 도구를 사용하였다. Lee(2007)의 척도는 16개 문항으로 구성되어 있으며 3개 영역 지각된 차별감, 지각된 적대감, 문화충격으로 이루어져 있다.
본 연구에서는 시어머니와의 관계의 만족도를 어떻게 지각하고 있는지를 파악하기 위하여 Olson과 David(1982)의 「ENRICH」(Enrich Relationship Issues, Communication and Happiness) 척도를 Song(1993)이 수정하여 시부모관계척도를 개발하였으며, 이를 토대로 Shin(2012)이 수정․보완하여 개발한 고부만족도 척도를 사용하였다. 고부만족도 척도는 고부관계만족도 7문항과 고부갈등 9문항으로 전혀 그렇지 않다 1점, 매우 그렇다 5점으로 점수가 높을수록 고부간의 만족정도와 갈등정도가 높음을 나타낸다.

성능/효과

다문화가정 시어머니의 노인우울에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 배우자가 없이 혼자 지내는 경우, 건강상태가 좋지 않은 경우, 문화적응스트레스의 지각된 차별감이 높을수록, 스트레스 대처전략의 소극적 대처로 나타났다. 외국인 며느리를 둔 시어머니의 이웃으로부터의 지각된 차별감은 주변사람들과 지역사회에서 외국인 며느리에 대한 왜곡된 시각과 편견에 대한 인식개선의 노력이 요구되며, 시어머니가 외국인 며느리와 관계에서 스트레스 상황에 놓이게 될 때 보다 적극적이고 긍정적인 스트레스 대처전략을 사용할 수 있도록 교육 및 훈련이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.
대상자의 일반적 특성에 따른 노인우울은 직업상태, 건강상태, 며느리 나라의 이해정도, 경제상태, 동거상태에서 유의한 차이가 있었다. 대상자가 직업을 가지고 있지 않을 때 보다 직업을 가지고 있을 때에 우울 점수가 높았는데 이는 나이가 들수록 수반되는 일상수행능력 저하뿐만 아니라 업무에서 노인이 차지하는 역할의 중요성이 감소함으로서 자아존중감 저하와 관련이 있는 것으로 사료된다(Kim & Kim, 2007).

후속연구

외국인 며느리를 둔 시어머니의 이웃으로부터의 지각된 차별감은 주변사람들과 지역사회에서 외국인 며느리에 대한 왜곡된 시각과 편견에 대한 인식개선의 노력이 요구되며, 시어머니가 외국인 며느리와 관계에서 스트레스 상황에 놓이게 될 때 보다 적극적이고 긍정적인 스트레스 대처전략을 사용할 수 있도록 교육 및 훈련이 필요할 것으로 사료된다. 또한 고부간의 원활한 의사소통이 중요하므로 언어 교육, 상대방 입장 되어보기 등 다문화가 정의 시부모를 대상으로 노인우울예방프로그램을 개발하고 적용하는 것이 필요하다고 생각한다. 제언으로 시아버지와 시어머니의 입장이 다르므로 후속연구에서는 시부모간의 비교연구와 중재프로그램 적용 후 변화를 확인하는 연구가 이루어졌으면 한다.
