가족식사는 어떻게 평가되어 왔는가? 가족이 함께 모여 식사를 하는 활동은 단지 함께 먹는 행위만이 아니라 가족 구성원이 상호작용하는 과정을 포함하고 있다. 가족식사는 일정한 형식을 갖추고 매일 반복되는 대표적인 가족의 일상의례로서[20], 정기적으로 가족 구성원 간 소통의 장을 제공함으로써 가족의 결속에 핵심적인 역할을 하는 것으로 평가되어 왔다. 가족식사를 하면서 이루어지는 상호작용을 통해 가족 구성원으로서의 역할과 책임을 인식하게 되고, 공동체 의식을 형성하며, 부모는 자녀에게 가족의 문화를 전달하고, 자녀를 교육시키며 사회화시키는 기회를 갖게 된다[9, 19, 56].
