간호대학생들의 간호학습 환경은 현재 어떤 상황인가? 약 50~100%의 간호대학생들은 임상실습현장에서 다양한 형태의 무례함 혹은 괴롭힘을 경험하고 있으며, 주제공자는 간호사이다 [5,9,15].  Anthony와 Yastik [9]이 보고한 질적연구에 의하면 간호사들은 학생들을 교육대상으로 보기보다는 방해자로 인식하여 이들을 의도적으로 배제하거나 혹은 공격적이고 예의 없는 행동을 한다. 간호대학생들이  무례함을 경험하게  되면 임상실습관련 스트레스가 더욱 심각해지며, 학습동기, 수행과정, 전문직관 확립에 방해를 받게 될 뿐만 아니라 간호사로의 진로 선택에도 부정적인 영향을 받는 다[5,9,11,16].
괴롭힘의 특징은 무엇인가? 무례함은 괴롭힘(bullying), 집단 폭력(mobbing), 해코지(harassment), 수평적 폭력(horizontal vio-lence) 등과 같은 용어와 혼용되고 있다[12]. 이중 괴롭힘은 특정 개인에 대한 부정적 행동이 일정기간 동안 지속되며, 반복성을 가진다는 특성이 있어서 무례함보다 높은 정도의 폭력으로 간주된다. 일부 학자들[13,14]은 무례함이 괴롭힘의 전 단계이고, 시간이 흐르면 괴롭힘으로 발전할 가능성이 있다고 주장하기도 한다.
