Bell마비의 원인은 무엇인가? 대부분 일측성으로 갑작스럽게 발생하는데, 일반적으로 48시간 내에 가장 심하게 나타나고 이후통이 1~2일 있은 뒤 안면마비가 오며, 수주~수개월 내에 80% 이상 회복된다. 원인은 아직 밝혀지지 않았지만, 안면신경이 herpes simplex virus에 감염되어 분절 탈수초형성이 일어나 이에 속발한 부종이 안면 신경관 내의 신경을 압박하여 안면 신경마비가 발생된다고 보는 학설이 유력하다2).
