이 연구의 목적은 2015 개정 교육과정 초등 과학 교과서 내 지구과학 영역에 제시된 개념과 탐구 활동의 내용을 분석하고 개선 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 교과 교육 전문가 2인과 초등교사 3인이 함께 교과서 내 개념과 탐구 활동 문제점 탐색과 개선 방안 조사를 위한 설문지를 개발하였다. 설문은 두 차례에 걸쳐 진행되었으며 모두 30명의 초등학교 교사와 3명의 지구과학 내용학 전공 교수가 설문에 참여하였다. 연구 결과 초등학교 교과서의 고체 지구 영역에서는 8개의 개념 요소, 유체 지구 영역에서는 3개의 개념 요소, 우주와 통합 단원에서는 1개의 개념 요소에서 오개념이 포함되어 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 탐구 활동에서도 고체 지구에서 7개 유체 지구에서 3개, 우주와 통합 단원에서 1개씩 탐구 활동 내용에 보완이 필요한 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 앞으로 교과서가 개정될 경우 내용 요소의 검정 과정을 강화할 필요가 있으며 나아가 교과서에 제시되는 개념의 경우 연계와 위계뿐 아니라 개념이 발달해 나가는 과정도 고려할 필요성이 있을 것이다.
