조직문화를 분류했을 때 그 내용은? 즉, ʻ변화 대 안정ʼ 이라는 상충적 가치를 한 축으로 하고, ʻ내부지향성 대 외 부지향성ʼ이라는 상충적 가치를 다른 축으로 하여 관계지 향 문화(Clan Culture), 혁신지향 문화(Adhocracy Culture), 위계지향 문화(Hierarchy Culture), 업무지향 문화(Market Culture)의 4가지 유형으로 조직문화를 분류한다. 관계지향 문화(Clan Culture)는 구성원 간 가족 같은 친밀감이 있고, 공동체적 단합이 강한 문화로 구성 원 간의 상호신뢰와 조직에 대한 충성심을 강조한다. 혁신지향 문화(Adhocracy Culture)는 창조적인 개척, 도전정신, 기업가 정신이 충만한 문화로 혁신, 위험 감수, 정 해진 규칙보다 신속한 문제해결을 강조한다. 위계지향 문 화(Hierarchy Culture)는 조직의 안정, 질서를 중시하고, 관리통제가 강한 문화로 업무상 규칙과 관행을 강조한다. 업무지향 문화(Market Culture)는 경쟁적이고 일, 결과를 중심으로 움직이는 문화로 목표 달성과 과업수행에 있어 생산성을 강조한다. 이러한 경쟁가치 접근은 조직의 효과성을 높이기 위하여 어느 한 문화유형를 강조하기보다는 모순적이고 상충적인 문화 유형을 동시에 추구해야 한다[18]는 점을 강조하고 있다.
