본 연구는 성인애착과 우울의 관계에서 정신화와 정서조절곤란의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 수행하였다. 이를 위해 전국의 성인 216명을 대상으로 성인애착, 정신화, 정서조절곤란, 우울을 측정하기 위한 설문을 진행하였으며, SPSS 23.0와 PROCESS Macro를 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성인애착, 애착불안, 애착회피, 정신화, 정서조절곤란, 우울은 유의한 상관이 나타났다. 둘째, 성인애착과 우울의 관계에서 정신화의 매개효과는 유의하지 않았으나, 정서조절곤란의 매개효과는 유의했다. 셋째, 정신화와 정서조절곤란의 이중매개효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 이중매개효과는 성인애착의 하위요인인 애착불안과 애착회피에서도 같은 결과가 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 불안정 성인애착을 가지고 있으며, 우울을 호소하는 내담자를 위한 효율적인 상담 방향성과 한계점, 추후연구를 위한 제언들에 대해 논의하였다.
