본 硏究에서는 비한자문화권, 그 가운데에서도 특히 영어권에서의 한국어 학습자들을 위한 漢字敎育에 관하여 관심을 가지고, 비한자문화권 한국어 학습자들에게 필요한 학습용 한자의 目錄을 확보하고자 하는 데에 일차적인 목표를 두고 있다. 學習用 漢字의 목록을 확보하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 현대 한국인이 사용하고 있는 어휘의 목록과 그 頻度 樣相을 검토하고, 국내의 한국어 교육 기관에서 사용 중인 교재, 특히 서울대학교와 연세대학교 그리고 고려대학교 등의 교재에 사용된 漢字語의 分布 양상을 살핀다. 이들 결과를 바탕으로 한 학습용 한자의 목록 選定基準은 다음과 같다. 效用性, 즉 語彙生産性과 使用頻度 및 활용 양상 그리고 難易度 등이 그것이다. 작업의 결과로 1,308개의 한국어 학습에 쓰일 漢字目錄을 作成할 수 있었다.

This research is to find a method of teaching Chinese characters more effectively in Korean education. In present Korean language, Chinese words still take up quite some proportion in Korean vocabulary. But in the Korean language education field, the problems of teaching Chinese characters have been overlooked and its importance has hardly been recognized. The basic purpose of this research is to focus on raising the interest of Chinese character education for non-Chinese cultural students, more specifically English speakers. Mainly, I will try to secure the list of Chinese characters that are necessary for non-Chinese cultural students. In order to get the list of educational Chinese characters, following things have been done; 1) examine the frequency aspect of the list of vocabulary that present Koreans use. 2) study the distribution aspect of the Chinese words that appear in the Korean language text books(specifically, Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Korea University text books). Based on the results of these studies, following supposition has been made for the criteria of the list for Chinese characters for non-Chinese cultural students. 1) Productivity of vocabulary that each Chinese character has, 2) Frequency of the use of the individual Chinese characters in a vocabulary, 3) Application aspect in the Korean as Foreign language education field, 4) Difficulty that individual Chinese characters have. Following the above criteria, we did a research and gathered words based on the frequency of the words that present Korean speakers use. After the research, we chose the top 10,000 words and from that we picked out the Chinese character words. From the last batch of the words, we compared the words that were used in the three universities' text book and made the list of 1,308 Chinese characters from those words.
