This study was designed to compare the effects of A-solution on the halitosis, the perception of oral malodor, and oral cavity microorganism distribution. The research design was double blinded clinical trial, repeated measures design applied counter balancing method. The subjects was 63 healthy volunteers complaining oral malodor. The experimental intervention was oral gargling with A-solution using aromatherapy essential oil(Mentha piperita, Citrus limon and Melaleuca alternifolia), Tantum solution or saline. The collected data were analyzed by ANOVA, ANCOVA, repeated measures of ANAVA, Multiple response analysis with SPSS program. The perception of oral malodor and halitosis were significantly low in the experimental group(F = 4.391, P=.014, F = 8.568, P=<.001, respectively). All of the subject had many microorganism in oral cavity, there was no significant difference between the three groups in distribution of microorganism. These findings indicate that A-solution could be effective in decreasing oral malodor and halitosis at 60 minutes after oral care. Because of deodorant effects of essential oil, the oral care, using A-solution was effective to reduce the halitosis and subjective feeling of oral malodor. This results will be enhanced the development of the caring protocol for oral hygiene.
