On the basis of Song, Ci-suk’s four novels that embody the May 18 Gwangju democratic uprising, this study examined how the author perceived the month of May and explored the author’s consciousness expressed in his so-called May novels. Particularly noting that although he aggressively involved in the May 18 uprising, forming the University Student Settlement Committee, he wrote only four novels on the uprising, the study sought to understand and appreciate situations and characters in the novels in connection with Song’s life. This historical approach is the most common way of researching the novel, but also becomes the most fundamental and essential process when the author"s life is full of experiences of historical incidents. In addition, based on Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s theory of political philosophy, the study saw the participants of the May 18 uprising as "Homo Sacer’ and the May 18 uprising as "state of exception,’ a paradox shown by national sovereignty. Homo sacer are exceptional beings ‘excluded from national laws or religious laws’ who are on the boundary line between the process of escaping being sacred and the process of being sacred. They, the byproducts produced by paradoxical national sovereignty, are both deserted beings and ‘ones who are alive but live like dead people" in difficult conditions. Song, Gi-suk, as a participatory novelist and educator who has put into practice what he says for his entire life, have delivered the warning messages of ‘Homo Sacer’ deserted by the nation though his May novels. Furthermore, He have tried to avoid a self-centered interpretation of the May uprising and sought to observe it from an objective point of view, warning that exaggerating a historical truth can lead to another misinterpretation of history.
