In this paper, I tried to find the clue for the following three problems while discussing the Taiwanese enterprises’ investment in China in regards to China’s reforms and open-door policies. First, the focus of this study, together with the discussion on Taiwanese enterprises’ investments’ definite economic effect on China is what positive roles Taiwanese enterprises played in the development of the cross-straits and their economic cooperation. For this, the clue can be found by defining the roles the Taiwanese enterprises have been playing or are able to play in the process where the two regions that are under different systems look for common features, interdependent on each other and integrate. Second is that all though there are different opinions on the result that is derived by the situation where the closeness of the economic relationship does not accompany political exchange (the controversy of whether it is spill-over or spill-back), I discuss the possibility that the two capitals’ economic interdependency would mitigate the political tension or separate the economic exchange from political complications. Since relating this to the unification of China and Taiwan is out of the scope of this paper, what we can cover here will be estimating the size of Taiwanese enterprises’ liaison and their influence through their investment history in case of political incident. Thirdly, what this paper tries to analyze apart from Taiwanese enterprises’ economic effect, is their influence on the Chinese society. Unlike other foreign affiliates, Taiwanese enterprises have the same traditional context, cultural experience and use the same language, and they are the ones that enter China without representatives. Also, in case of the Taiwanese enterprises that entered Fujian, they are investing with unique background, unlike other Chinese emigrant companies, that they are investing in their hometown and using blood relation. This makes it easier for Taiwanese enterprises to use or contact the government for their corporate activities and influences on recovering the national and cultural homogeneity within the investment area. Also, through the exchange between Taiwanese and Chinese within the region, this can have a positive effect on plurality of the regional society. By analyzing Taiwanese enterprises’ corporate activities in Fujian, this paper discusses the Taiwanese enterprises’ political, social and cultural roles and their influences. However, the roles of the Taiwanese enterprises may not be always positive and therefore through defining the implications and problems that the Taiwanese enterprises’ roles have, I have carried out the process of balancing the discussion parallel to the above.
