An Essay on Material Ingredient and Firing Temperature of White Porcelain in Chosun Dynasty - Focusing on Yanggu White Porcelain

There was a special government kiln in Saongwon to make porcelain which was needed for royal family in Chosun dynasty. So, branch kilns were installed in Gwangju, Gyeonggi province, to make porcelains for ruling household and government office in 1467 and 1468. Base materials were supplied to make porcelains from many local districts, and the quality of the materials was important because government office had chosen materials of high quality. Especially, Yanggu white clay was estimated as an important material to make porcelains in government use since the 16th century. This study examines Yanggu white clay in historic references, temperature at which the porcelain were made, and the names of materials through chemical experimentation and ingredient analysis. Yanggu white clay is white mica, kaolin which contains 0.13~0.73% iron, has less impurities, and consists of homogeneous white mica particles which were properly fired at 1,200℃. However Jinju white clay has abundant of Al₂O₃ which is magnetized at relatively high temperature. Therefore, we found that Yanggu white clay only, or with some amount of Jinju clay, has an important role in making porcelain, to sum up researches so far. In addition, researches and experiments make certain that there should be a reexamination against the firing temperature of 1300℃, because the kiln and firing circumstance of that age are different from today"s. Thus, it is irrational to insist that the firing temperature was 1300℃ by current criteria for judgement.
