Effect of the Traditional Musical Method of Carl Orff on Children’s Musical Attitude and Rhythm Development

The objective of this study is to figure out how Carl Orff’s traditional musical teaching method affects children’s musical attitude and rhythm development. To examine this, the following detailed questions of the study are considered: Research Question 1. Does the traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff affect children’s musical attitude? Research Question 1-1. Does the traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff affect the exploration of children’s musical attitudes? Research Question 1-2. Does the traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff affect the ability of children to express musical attitudes? Research Question 1-3. Does the traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff affect the appreciation of children’s musical attitudes? Research Question 2. Does the traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff affect children’s rhythm development? For the study, five-year-old children, who were in a nursery located in Busan, were selected. For sampling, H Children center was selected by primary intentional sampling. Then, children under five years old from H Children center were divided into an experimental group and a control group by random sampling. As a result, the experimental group of 21 children and control group of 21 children were sampled. As the subjects of the study, the experimental group’s average age was 62 months, and the control group’s average age was 65 months. Before carrying out this experiment, a preliminary test was conducted to verify the difference between the two groups, in order to verify the homogeneity of the experimental group and control group. The musical attitude test was divided into three sections - exploration, expression, and impression - through a checklist. It was checked using a five-point scale for each item. The rhythm test tool PMMA scored one point for each of the 20 items. SPSS 10.0 was used as a statistical analysis tool for data analysis. As the data analysis method, the t-test, an average difference verification of two groups, was used. The Results of the Study are as follows: 1. The traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff did affect the children’s musical attitude. 2. The traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff did affect the exploration of children’s musical attitudes. 3. The traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff did affect the ability of children to express their musical attitudes. 4. The traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff did affect the appreciation of children’s musical attitudes. 5. The traditional musical teaching method of Carl Orff did affect the children’s rhythm development.
