본 연구는 유아영어교육에 관한 국내 연구동향을 파악하기 위하여 유아영어교육 관련 국내 학위논문 119편과 학술지 논문 50편을 분석하여 연구의 양적 추세, 연구내용, 연구방법의 경향을 파악하고 논의하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아영어교유분야의 국내연구는 1980년대부터 시작되었으나 그 수가 미미했고, 2000년 이후에 활성화되기 시작하였다. 둘째, 연구내용은 유아영어교육의 실태를 조사하고 교사, 학부모 인식을 알아보는 연구와 유아영어교육의 교수방법에 관한 연구들이 주류를 이루고 있었으나, 2003년 이후에는 실태조사연구들은 줄어들고 조기영어교육의 효과를 검토해보는 연구 등 연구내용이 다양화되었다. 셋째, 유아영어교육분야에서 가장 많이 사용된 연구방법은 조사연구이었으며, 그 다음으로 학술지논문에서는 문헌연구가 학위논문에서는 실험연구가 많이 사용되었다.

A major goal of the present study was to examine the trends of research regarding English education for young children. Analyses were conducted on 119 domestic master and doctoral dissertations, and on 50 journals published in Korea. The focus was on the number, content, and method of research. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, English education for young children have not received much academic attention until 2000. Secondly, the major themes of the research on English education for young children was to survey actual conditions of the English education in kindergartens and private institutes in Korea, and to investigate the effects of teaching strategies in English education for preschoolers. The effect of the English education for young children began to get researcher"s attention since 2003. Thirdly, survey was the predominant research methodology in this field. It was suggested that English education needs to get more attention of researchers, since most of the kindergartens are providing English education for their children. Some topics are suggested for the further studies regarding English education for young children: Content analyses of the private English programs, development of the teaching strategies which children enjoy, and development of the programs which can be integrated into the regular kindergarten curriculum, the effect of early English education, and the observation study of the children"s learning and experiences in English education.
