The purpose of this study was to examine whether the background variables of kindergarten teachers made any differences to their own knowledge on early childhood science education and their attitude toward that, and the relationship between their knowledge and attitude. The subjects in this study were 122 teachers who worked at public and private kindergartens in Busan. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the kindergarten teachers who worked in public kindergarten, who were at the age of 33 and up and who received graduate-school education had more extensive and detailed knowledge on early childhood science education. Second, the kindergarten teachers were better knowledgeable about nature, biology and the body, but had less knowledge on tools, machinery, the universe, the environment and food. Third, they took a significantly different attitude toward early childhood science education according to the type of kindergarten, career, age and education. Fourth, those who had more detailed and complex knowledge were better aware of the worth of early childhood science education and had more confidence in it. Therefore college curriculum and training courses geared toward kindergarten teachers should give more weight to early childhood science education, and the kind of teaching method that allows would-be and incumbent teachers to acquire systemized knowledge should be inttoduced. Teachers should direct their energy into class work study in order to improve their expertise in this field. And in order to stir up their interest and confidence, they should keep posted about easily applicable academic activities and be urged to take training courses in this area.
