The purpose of this study was to examine the viewing motives, experiences, and effects of weather program on television. The investigation proceeded from the two research questions: (a) What are the motives of adults viewers for watching weather programs? (b) What are the relationships of the viewing motives and experiences with the effects? The viewing motives tapped the reasons the adults viewers watched the weather programs. The viewing experiences represented an appraisal of parasocial interaction with and an evaluation on an expertise of broadcasters of weather programs. The viewing effects assessed cognitive evaluation of the program contents and behavioral outcomes such as instrumental application, interpersonal application, and informative application of the program contents. Questionnaires were administered conveniently to adults viewers of weather programs. Three hundred and thirteen questionnaires provided usable data. The majority of the sample ranged in age from 20 to 39(N=286, 91.4%) with 43.8% men(N=137) and 56.2% women(N=176). Statistical analyses included factor analysis and correlation analysis. Factor analysis was used to investigate the first research question, the motives of adult viewers. Correlation analysis was employed to examine the second research question, the relationships between viewing motives and experiences and viewing effects. Factor analysis yielded eight meaningful factors accounting for 54.4% of the total variance. The factors were information and refreshment, entertainment and relaxation, habit, interpersonal use, ordinary use, rest, technological characteristics, and characteristics of program content. Correlation analysis showed instrumental viewing motives constructed viewing effects while ritualized viewing motives did not formulated viewing effects. The analysis also yielded that parasocial interaction did not lead to the occurrence of behavioral effects while the appraisal of expertise on weather caster was connected to the behavioral effects. An application of the uses and gratifications research to weather program contexts and specific research agendas for future study were suggested.
