This study aims to analyze minority group’s racial encounters on 24 Korean students studying in a UK university. In recent decades, on account of ambiguous and covert forms, it is difficult that people of minority groups know their racial discriminations. In this study, qualitative method and semi-structured interview was used and the data was recruited by Korean Society. Followings results from this study. First, because they would protect their self-esteem, Korean students tend to deny or minimize their racial discrimination in four ways: they attributed discriminations to their poor English, they did not blame those who discriminated them because they are non-educated children, they showed ‘good-guest attitude’, and as a reflection of discriminator they blame Korean people who discriminated other minorities in Korea. Second, some of them assessed their racial encounters as racism. They hesitated to say what they experienced because their experiences could be very covert or ambiguous. Even some of them seemed to feel their racial discriminations only in public institutions: they probably did not perceive personal discriminations as racism. This study shows that how minority group’s people perceive their racial discriminations and how they deny or minimize their racial encounters. It also shows how ethnic and racial major people can improve their multicultural citizenship which Korean people can see ethnic others with empathy and tolerance in Korea changing rapidly into a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society.
