Chinese scholars suggested a unique theory, Ki philosopy. According to this theory there are three main elements, namely mind, body and ki(the third element), in human being. In this theory we encounter a difficult problem how mind and ki are interrelated. In this study I examined three main types of theories on this problem. These theories are not only related to human nature but related to ultimate being, Tao. Futhermore they are related to practice methods and an ideal stage of attaining tao. We can say this study is very useful to some scholars interested in east asian tradition of seeking tao. Zhungzi, an early taoist philosopher, mainly stressed on spiritual enlightening, but suggested fragmentary information on ki theory and practice. He also suggested to maintain one’s mind in unattached and quiet state. He described the stage of zhenren as attaining tao and enjoying absolute spiritual freedom. Gehong, a philosopher of early taoist religion, regarded ki as a primordial element of the world, and human mind as a function producted by ki. According to this viewpoint he made much of maintaining original human vitality, primordial ki. He intended to ascend to the state of hsienJin, a stage of attaining immortality, and creative power. Naetan(Internal alchemy) scholars regarded tao as a united being of original nature and primordial ki, namely mind and ki. They suggested cultivation of mind and training of ki have to be practised in mutual harmony. They intended to ascend to a stage of hsien-Jin attaining immortality, spiritual freedom, and creative power. But there are various streams in Naetan thoughts and accordingly various theories about practical method to accomplish this purpose.
