Urban lifestyle is dramatically changing thanks to various network technologies. City people act like mobile nomads who prefer covering a wide range of fields to staying around one spot. The concept of mobile space, in this regard, carries an increasing technological and spacial potential, having been established as part of urban life. Nonetheless, this new spacial idea has yet to be fully utilized due to lack of social recognition of its innovative features: mobility and variability. People still hold stereotypes of space: permanency and immobility. Lately, with some architectural attempts such as Archigram and Metabolism based on mobility and variability, there have been active research on the variable systems. Those research, however, have confined mobile space to limited materials and simple shapes, seemingly lagging behind today’s rapid advancement. Therefore, this study tried to review types and features of mobile space which is movable, light and variable, and then to classify characteristics of expanding spaces by analyzing the methods of artificially putting gas or liquid into a space by humans, the cases where a space reacts to the environment or a human behavior, the ways of expansion, and spacial types according to kinetic movement. The purpose of this study is, as mentioned above, to suggest ways to develop the concept of expanding space, focusing on possible various shapes, functions, spacial lightness and rapidity rather than restricted forms and functions with limited materials.
