In modern society, individuals of good communication skill are highly recognized. Since verbal and non-verbal skills play significant roles in the success and failure of communication and the attention to communication skill increases, the methods of message delivery are required to be analyzed more rigorously. Communication skills are essential, such as how to implement a message and how to configure it to maximize interest. More than ever, success and failure ride on a simple question. How well does one use verbal and non-verbal communication to generate the necessary interest. In this following empirical research, inaugural addresses of the president Obama of U.S. and the president Lee of Korea were chosen for the comparative analysis of non-verbal communication skills. In addition, the effect of gestures on message delivery in speeches is evaluated since the inaugural address is not a simple announcement but an important communication opportunity to persuade people for the political purposes. The video of speeches of Mr. Obama and Mr. Lee were analyzed and the non-verbal message delivery methods such as hand movements, facial expressions, eye motion were measured. Mr. Obama quite often used hand movements while Mr. Lee did not move much of hands. In addition, Mr. Obama showed relatively even eye motion in all directions but Mr. Lee has shown robotic and repetitive eye motions left, front, and right direction. Both of presidents have overall shown solemn facial expression during the speeches but Mr. Obama had relatively more natural and diverse in facial expressions. Both messagsare consistent with a look of gravity and rigidity though in regards to Mr. Obama’s face, greater changes of expression were evident. Creating a culture that is relatively free of the expectation and pomp of the American inauguration and the Confucian ideology rooted in South Korea would more clearly show the difference between East and West. Each President’s use of non-verbal cues, along with the cultural differences arising from certain audience viscosity can not be ignored. Of course we must also take into account that there can simply be a great difference in ability depending on the speaker in question. The concept of "space" between speaker and audience is an example with Korean culture showing much greater distance which in turn leads to message delivery that can seem one sided when compared to the atmosphere fostered in American firms. In addition, the subtlety of non-verbal messages given through speeches depends largely on how much solidarity exists between the speaker and the audience. Therefore what is reflected is it is the nature of men rather than a country’s cultural differences that lead to differences in nonverbal communication, nonverbal messaging as well as speech.
