Many countries around the world have selected the content industry as key for the 21st century and are continually supporting and investing in it. The Korean government has also recognized, after the inauguration of President Lee Myung-bak’s administration, the fact that local development leads to the enhancement of the country’s global competitiveness, which led them to establish a five-year plan for this. It was also announced that the existing 16 city/province system would be restructured into ‘5+2 economic regions’ and that more support would be extended to such fields as knowledge service, convergence and cultural content in a wider variety of industries. In relation to this, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has officially launched the K-Culture Promotion Taskforce for the sustained development of hallyu (Korean wave), with the First Vice Culture Minister as its head, and announced creative strategies to boost traditional culture. Notably, they announced as one of the strategies the promotion of major must-see masterpiece performances among foreigners who visit Korea and support for year-round showing of the performances at their exclusive theaters, citing Chongdong Theater’s Gyeongju City brand performance “MISO 2 - Silla, The Land of Gods” as a case in point. “MISO 2 - Silla, The Land of Gods,” Chongdong Theater’s ongoing Gyeongju brand performance, is the country’s first regular local brand performance project carried out jointly by the central and local governments to attract foreign tourists and promote domestic tourism. The project of producing and holding the high-quality local brand performance based on the historical heritage of Gyeongju aims to strengthens the competitive edge of the local performing arts industry and contribute to the facilitation of local culture and tourism. The study analyzes the case of Chongdong Theater’s “MISO 2 - Silla, The Land of Gods,” a Gyeongju brand performance, to examine the effects of a local brand performance on the local tourism industry, and investigates the understanding of local audiences and relevant professionals on the staging of regular performances using local cultural brands to help these performances take firm root in communities.
