The Effect of Domestic Violence on Children’s Peer and Teacher Relationship according to the Types of Violence Experience

Family violence can undermine not only children’s family relationship but also their peer and teacher relationship. Children’s experiences of family violence can be specified into direct, witnessing and dual experiences, which will effect their social relationship in different ways. Thus, this study investigated the effect of these three types of children’s experience of family violence on their peer and teacher relationship, thereby drawing on implications for social work intervention. The survey data were gathered from 196 children who are at the 5th and 6th grades having experiences with family violence, in 6 elementary schools in Daegu. Main findings were: first, the largest proportion of the children had direct experiences(39.2%), next dual experiences(37.8%), and witnessing experiences(23%). Second, differences of the level of both peer and teacher relationship among the three groups were not significant(F=.928, p=ns), but the dual experience group showed a significantly lower level of peer relationship than the direct experience group(t=2.084, p<.05). Finally, by regression analyses, in the direct experience group, physical violence by either father or mother demonstrated significantly negative effect on teacher relationship; in witnessing group, physical violence between father and mother showed significantly negative effect on peer relationship; and in dual experience group, emotional violence showed significantly negative effect on peer relationship. On the basis of these results, implications for social work practice were suggested.
