The purpose of this paper is to consider human subjectivity and love according to the theological understanding of Karl Rahner(1904-1984). Rahner, different from the modernist perspectives of some other scholars, understands human subjectivity in relationship with a loving God. In his opinion, human subjectivity is rooted in one’s giving oneself as a gift to God, who loves human beings. Through transcendental Experience, a human being finds the meaning of his or her existence and recognizes that he or she is invited to implement his or her meaning of existence in a particular historical situation. From a philosophical point of view, transcendental experience is a person’s experience of encountering an infinite horizon. Through this experience, one recognizes that one is both subject and person. From a theological view point, one experiences through proclamation of the gospel that God loves oneself. One tries to respond to His love in an act of freedom, uniting oneself with God in offering oneself as a gift to God. Human love has three forms: self-love, love of neighbor and love of God. Even though these forms of love appear differently because of the heterogeneity of their objects, they are one and the same. Self-love is completed through love of neighbor, and the love of God is manifested in the love of one’s neighbor. Without love of one’s neighbor in a particular historical situation love toward God is not possible. Also without a God-directed love the meaning of love of neighbor cannot exist. Love unites everyone and everything. Only love makes a human being a subject and a person.
